Creating Interfaith Harmony--Literally

4/18/2017

Every faith has traditions of devotional singing together, music that takes us into the mystical place of communion with God. I hope this project helps you discover that beautiful condition of oneness with the Creator and with each other.  I hope you experience understanding and love that crosses all barriers.  Chanting together is a way to create harmony, literally and figuratively.

What's working for you in your community? What puzzles you? What uplifts you?

In my community there is a deep belief that to sing together is kind of unimportant. in 20 years, I've had little success in moving the needle on this. It isn't that the folks are unwilling to sing - they will sing especially if I lead them. It's more that they are unaware of the power of singing or chanting together and they are supremely incurious as to why we don't sing and other faith communities do.

I just tried to call you! DO NOT DESPAIR! Growth is always uncomfortable. North American dominant culture is seriously spiritually constipated around the arts and music and singing in particular.

One of the things I am doing is re-reading Istvan Dely's Wildfire e-book. The section on music is so well put together - I think I am going to introduce this to the study circle (Book 10 - sec 3) I've been co-tutoring on Sunday mornings. There's beginning to be an understanding amongst this group - which contains members of the ATC - that Baha'i devotions/devotionals are actually gatherings for WORSHIP and not just something we do be cause the House asked us to do them. Part of my strategy here is that we have a family that makes up 80% of my Baha'i community, so I am really working with the family members on the ATC on studying the Writings on devotions and music - trying to evolve us out of the apathy we are collectively in. Plus I will be using your guidance on creating group chants with them. I'd so love to talk to you when you have some time. 256.541.8981 Much love to you!!

I have been smitten with the beauty of sacred chant as long as I can remember.  No matter what the style or language, the love for our Creator seems to come through. Its opens the hearts and draws people closer together. I wish everyone could experience this transcendent beauty. I wish religious hatred would cease.
